Certain areas of the site can’t be directly edited by content authors.
Why there are some areas you can’t edit
Since the website is built in a content management system (CMS) – in this case, Drupal – a lot of the content is reusable. This is beneficial because it means you probably only have to edit the same content once if it changes.
Additionally, some details need to be displayed in a certain way that doesn’t lend itself to being easily edited – for security issues, or because it needs special, specific styling. (Examples include: the logo and other info in the header).
You can directly edit
Basic pages – this accounts for most of the content on the website.
- This is effectively the content in the middle of the inner pages with an “edit” tab you can see when you log in.
- If the area you want to edit isn’t visible when you hit edit, it’s probably something the web developer will need to deal with behind the scenes.
- Some content in the sidebar can be edited within the “edit view” of the page – under “Related content”.
You can indirectly edit
For a lot of areas on the site (databases, staff directory, latest news…), what’s shown are “views”, or essentially, lists, of certain types of content. You can’t edit these lists/views directly, but you can change what’s shown by editing the content that is shown in the list: for example, if you notice that your phone number is wrong on the staff directory, you’d edit the phone number on the staff content type page – this will change the phone number wherever it is listed.
You can affect what is shown in certain areas of the home page: News, Explore Tisch, by creating a new piece of news/exhibit, and clicking “promote to front page”.
Alternatively, you can take old news/exhibits/collections down from the front page by unclicking “promote to the front page”.
Other lists of content: staff, subject guides, databases, equipment*, latest news page, hours.
You can edit with training/permission
Hours, Menus (mega menu, plus front page tasks menu), subject guides.
Special content types that are automated
Databases – come from Alma
- Note that you can provide customized database descriptions on subject guides .
Workshops & events – will be entered in LibCal and automatically populate the website.
